Twin Poles of Attention
From the early 17th century onwards, traditional faith-based theological explanations of reality gave way to empirical explanations based on newly discovered laws of physics. This enormous shift in collective consciousness established scientific materialism as the dominant paradigm of western civilisation. According to this philosophy, which still prevails as the orthodox scientific view today, human beings are nothing more than a bunch of atoms in a complex chemical formula.
Postmodern Despair
This dispiriting philosophy about the ultimate nature of human existence has caused enormous confusion and bewilderment. The official endorsement of this reductionist philosophy by the scientific establishment has installed in collective consciousness a dark vision of existence, based on a sense of ultimate meaninglessness and futility. Much suffering, aberration, and despair has resulted. This is reflected in the widespread contemporary view of reality as a “cruel, dog-eat-dog, pointless, black, chaos” (Woody Allen, Whatever Works, 2009).
Good News
But there’s good news. The reign of scientific materialism is rapidly coming to a close. Although this nihilistic paradigm has dominated collective consciousness for hundreds of years, it is no more permanent than the paradigm it replaced. Just as boldly as it took over in the seventeenth century, it’s being superseded in the twenty-first. Spiritual Intelligence (SQ) is emerging as the next stage in the evolution of collective consciousness.
Science of the Soul
The SQ paradigm is based on the science of the soul. The soul is simply dismissed as non-existent by scientific materialism. Religion, on the other hand, portrays the soul as a mysterious entity situated in a remote supernatural location, accessible to faith alone. But the SQ paradigm identifies the soul as self-evidently real at a psychological location, accessible to everyone directly, without having to believe anything.
Being the soul is experienced as being feeling-awareness itself, which is located at the subject-pole of attention. This is the ever-present alternative to being the ego, which is experienced as being the body and mind, located at the object-pole of attention. Shifting from the object-pole to the subject-pole of attention creates a corresponding shift from the ego to the soul, which activates spiritual intelligence.
Spiritual intelligence experiences the qualities traditionally ascribed to the soul, by virtue of the native qualities of feeling-awareness itself, which are experienced at the subject-pole of attention in moments of presence, in the form of wisdom, compassion, integrity, joy, love, creativity, and peace.
Scientific Method
The SQ paradigm extends the application of the scientific method beyond the narrow limits set arbitrarily by scientific materialism. By including feeling-awareness itself (or the soul) as the subject of experience, the SQ paradigm goes beyond the hitherto exclusive scientific focus on objects of experience, as required by the philosophical materialism of orthodox science.
The key principle of the scientific method is that knowledge qualifies as scientific, when the relevant facts are observable, verifiable and repeatable. Based on this criterion, the subject-pole of attention is a scientific fact. This is because the subject-pole of attention is observable; it’s existence is verifiable both inter-subjectively and neurologically; and it can be experienced repeatedly. Therefore knowledge of the subject-pole of attention qualifies as scientific knowledge.
Consequently, withholding scientific recognition from the subject-pole of attention, by limiting the scope of scientific enquiry to objects of attention, applies the scientific method too narrowly. In the process, human beings are defined too narrowly also.
Reduction
Scientific materialism defines human beings exclusively in object-pole terms, composed of atoms, chemicals, and biological structures. Subjective experiences, such as perceptions, thoughts, emotions, beliefs, etc, are defined as electrical discharges in the brain. However, this reduction to the object-pole leaves out the essential element, which is feeling-awareness itself.
Without feeling-awareness itself (or the soul) at the subject-pole of attention, there would be nothing whatsoever at the object-pole of attention, regardless of how many brain-events occurred. There would be no perceptions, thoughts, emotions, or memories, and no observations of atoms or molecules, or any other experiences of body, or mind, or world.
Consequently, by reducing human beings to phenomena at the object-pole of attention, scientific materialism leaves out the most important element. Therefore, as a science of human nature, and as a basis for self-understanding, the current scientific understanding of human nature is seriously deficient.
Vital Correction
Nevertheless scientific materialism performed an essential function in its time. In the 17th century it brought an end to unquestioned acceptance of theological explanations of reality. This was an important advance. Religious doctrine had stifled discovery for millennia, by privileging tradition and belief over observation and experience. Establishing the scientific method as the gatekeeper of knowledge was a vital correction.
Over-Correction
However it turned out to be an over-correction, because the scientific method was applied too narrowly, in accordance with the premises of philosophical materialism. This philosophy denies the existence of what is not material, and therefore by definition excludes the subject-pole of attention from scientific recognition. Consequently, when applied with the narrow focus of philosophical materialism, the scientific method provides an incomplete and utterly misleading understanding of human nature.
New Correction
The emergence of the SQ paradigm marks a further correction, signifying the end of the dark age of scientific materialism. As a synthesis of modern psychology and ancient spirituality, SQ includes both poles of attention. SQ thus contributes to the integral science of human nature, representing the union of body, mind and soul.
New Paradigm
SQ is the source of personal fulfillment, the means of peak performance, and the key to co-operation, tolerance and peace. In an age of unprecedented global crises, of our own creation, coupled with immense potential for improving the quality of life for all, SQ represents an advanced dimension of intelligence whose time has come. SQ is emerging as the new paradigm of the new millennium.
SQ Education Program
Spiritual intelligence is easy to experience. In fact we all experience SQ spontaneously at times, but all too rarely. Learning how to engage SQ intentionally is the key. Level 2 of the SQ Education Program provides instruction in how to activate your spiritual intelligence, to release your inherent spiritual capabilities.

This is something lots of baby boomers ought to study. The feelings of neglect are there at numerous levels when a single is over the hill.
Feelings of neglect can occur at any age. As a baby boomer myself, I can tell you that there is more than one hill! When you are over the hill yourself, you will discover that there’s another hill still ahead of you. The biggest hill is the last one. None of my readers, of any age, are over that one yet!

This course (SQ Education Level 2) teaches the methodology to confirm SQ in your own experience. But it would be useful to know why you don’t entirely agree with this post. If you explain, we can have a useful discussion that may also be relevant to other readers. Hopefully, I will learn something too, about how to explain SQ more clearly. But although it’s simple to activate SQ, it’s not always easy to do so, especially when emotional reactions are involved. Therefore, it’s necessary to practice applying SQ in different subjective states. Level 2 of the SQ Education Program provides exercises to develop your spiritual intelligence, so that you can call on your SQ in any situation.

How long does it take before I could be deemed knowledgeable?
If you understand this post, then you already know more about this subject than 99% of the population. So you’re doing pretty well already. After completing Level 1 and Level 2 of the SQ Education Program, you would have a basic knowledge of SQ. That takes about six months. The reason it takes six months to complete both courses is that Level 2 includes experiential exercises designed to increase your SQ over time.
But you asked how long it would take to be deemed knowledgeable about this subject. Being knowledgeable goes well beyond the basic knowledge you would acquire from these two courses. It would take years to be deemed knowledgable. That’s because there’s an immense amount of territory to cover. The SQ paradigm represents a synthesis of psychology and spirituality. Therefore it’s necessary to have a thorough grounding in both disciplines. That’s no small task. Both psychology and spirituality have a vast literature base. Moreover, being knowledgeable is more than simply book-learning. Experiential learning is also necessary. It’s critical to field test the theory in your own experience, before you can claim to be knowledgeable about this subject. That’s what really takes the time.
However it’s important to keep knowledgeability in perspective. Being knowledgeable is not the most important thing. The most important thing is to know enough to actually use your SQ. And that doesn’t take years of study. You don’t need to be very knowledgeable to know how to activate your spiritual intelligence. You just need to know a few basic things. The precise things you need to know are covered in Level 2 of the Education Program. You can find out more here.

The underlying psychological process common to all types and traditions of meditation (with the exception of TQ traditions), is the shift in identity from the object-pole to the subject-pole of attention. This shift transcends the ego by being the soul, and therefore activates SQ. As the intelligence of the soul, SQ experiences the soul’s qualities, in the form of peace, compassion, joy, love, wisdom, integrity, and creativity. However, the use of SQ doesn’t require the traditional meditation setting (sitting down, in a quiet place, with eyes closed). SQ can be exercised anywhere in any circumstances. SQ is about being different, and therefore feeling different, which cannot be achieved merely from a logical explanation on its own. SQ challenges not only traditional religious beliefs, but also the doctrine of philosophical materialism that underpins orthodox science and contemporary secular culture. Consequently, there are a number of entrenched positions from which SQ might be opposed. However, in some cases, people are not open to new ideas. Some are simply unwilling to question their cherished beliefs. When presented with a contrary paradigm, rather than consider the evidence, some people prefer to suspend their critical faculties. In such cases it can still be useful to explain the evidence for SQ, but it might be better to leave it at that, without trying to argue someone into agreeing with you. Your words might have an impact later, when the conversation is over, after there has been some time for reflection.

The “men who know” told us lots of stuff. In the 19th century, when railways were first being built, the “men who know” told us that travelling more than 30 miles per hour would cause lethal harm to the human body. At various points in history, the “men who know” told us with absolute authority that the sun goes round the earth, that the earth is flat, and that the stars are little holes in the dome of the heavens through which divine light shines upon us, etc etc.
Never mind the “men who know”. What do you know? If you apply the SQ methodology you will know a lot more than you might have expected. For one thing you will know that you can experience the spiritual qualities of the soul, in the form of peace, compassion, joy, love, wisdom and creativity. This doesn’t mean that you won’t die, but it does mean that your life doesn’t have to be a painful adventure of the ego, it can be the fulfilling journey of the soul. It’s not “too late”. You can find this out for yourself. Level 2 of the SQ Education Program shows how.

Good question. I don’t know the answer. I’m assuming you are referring to my point about the “suffering, aberration and despair” caused by the propaganda of scientific materialism. What are the statistics on how many people have been affected in this way, and to what degree? It’s unknown. But I believe there is evidence that there is a highly significant effect. For example, the theme of human alienation has featured prominently in literature and the arts over the last 50 years, and the incidence of crime, anti-social behaviour, depression, anxiety and youth suicide has increased in all westernized countries over the same period.
Have you considered adding some social bookmarking links to this blog. At the very least for myspace.

In summary what I’m saying in this article is that science and spirituality are not opposed to each other, as traditionally assumed. Orthodox science is based on a materialist philosophy, and therefore rejects spirituality. But contemporary science is based on integral principles, and therefore supports spirituality. Consequently, science and spirituality go together. Thats all I’m saying in this article. But it takes a lot of words to explain the reasons why.
I work in web advertising at the product aspect, so it gives great insight into different products, although I strongly really feel you might be a rare one who takes into consideration the needs of their visitors.

SQ is about being the soul, instead of being the ego. Being the soul means experiencing yourself as feeling-awareness itself, instead of experiencing yourself as your body and mind. The energy of the soul is spirit, which is received in moments of presence, at the subject-pole of attention. Spirit has the native qualities of feeling-awareness itself, which are peace, compassion, joy, love, wisdom and creativity. It’s necesary to experience this, not just know about it from reading articles like this. The experience of spirit does the “winning over”. This is why SQ is a spiritual matter, not merely an intellectual matter (IQ), or an emotional matter (EQ). The SQ Education Program provides coaching in how to experience SQ.
