Secular Methodology

Spiritual intelligence is not religious. It doesn’t depend on beliefs. It depends on direct personal experience. 3Q Training uses a secular methodology based on the findings of scientific research. Spiritual intelligence is an innate capability that we all possess, which enables us to transcend the ego and connect with our authentic self.

Benefits of Spiritual Intelligence

Spiritual intelligence connects people to their own source of meaning, purpose, and ethics, and develops the characteristics that result in personal fulfilment:

Access to your authentic self beyond the ego
Deeper sense of meaning and purpose
Ability to convert challenges into opportunities
How to be your best in any situation
Whole-brain high performance life-skills

Spiritual intelligence develops the individual and team qualities that drive business success:

Employees who are highly engaged
A workplace with less ego-induced drama
A strong commitment to the company mission
People who work hard but with less stress
Whole-brain high performance work-skills

Richard Griffiths

Richard Griffiths is a psychologist and corporate trainer. He is the founder of the 3Q Institute and a former National Chairman of the Transpersonal Psychology Section of the Australian Psychological Society. His published work represents his findings from a lifetime of research and practice as a psychologist and spiritual practitioner. Alongside his research in psychology, he maintained a personal spiritual practice, and had first hand experience of a number of different spiritual traditions. Eventually a secular synthesis of psychology and spirituality emerged from his research in the form of the spiritual intelligence paradigm, which is the foundation of training at the 3Q Institute.

  • I’m glad you appreciate my findings on spiritual intelligence. If you want to learn and teach how to activate spiritual intelligence, the 3Q Practitioner training course might be for you. Sign up for this webinar if you want to know more about this three month online course.

  • I’m pleased you enjoy my findings on spiritual intelligence. This is a research project I began on my own a long time ago. As a psychologist and spiritual practitioner, my purpose was to find a synthesis of the hitherto separate disciplines of psychology and spirituality. Along the way I had help from numerous people and organisations. Eventually the spiritual intelligence paradigm emerged as a summary of my findings. At that point, my project went from a solo effort to a group endeavour, with the founding of the 3Q Academy, which is the professional association of 3Q Practitioners. More information about the 3Q Academy will be included in the webinar.

Hey! I haven’t seen this info on other blogs about this topic. How are you aware all these things that you write about in the articles on this site?

    • How am I aware of this information? The articles on this site summarise my findings on spiritual intelligence. My research is published only on this site, which is why you have not seen this information elsewhere. My research draws on the following three sources. Firstly, the findings of scientific research in a number of different fields, including cognitive psychology, psycho-analysis, transpersonal psychology and neuroscience [ref]. Secondly, the teachings of ancient spiritual traditions, based on the experience of spiritual practitioners over thousands of years [ref]. And thirdly, my own experience as a psychologist and spiritual practitioner [ref]. After combining evidence from all these sources, a secular synthesis of psychology and spirituality emerged from my research, in the form of the spiritual intelligence paradigm [ref]. This is the foundation of training on the 3Q Practitioner Training course [ref]. The webinar will go into more detail about the Practitioner course.

I think you have managed to address the state of mind that a lot of people are in. The sense of wanting to help, but not knowing how or where, is something a lot of us are going through.

    • Many people feel moved to help others, but as you say it can be difficult to know where to start. There are many ways to make a contribution, but the vast range of options can seem a bit daunting.
Several years ago I posed this question to myself: “If I only had a short time to live, what would I want to share with others from my discoveries after decades of research in psychology and spirituality?” There was only one condition. My answer had to offer what was most useful and most beneficial for the most people from my discoveries. After much deliberation the SQ paradigm emerged as the best summary of my discoveries for this purpose.
Accordingly, this site presents an introduction to spiritual intelligence.
Everyone needs this information. Everyone needs to understand the basic operating system of their own awareness, represented by the twin poles of attention. Knowing how to navigate from one pole of attention to the other, from ego to soul, is basic training for human life. Understanding SQ is therefore most important for everyone. So coming back to your comment, teaching spiritual intelligence is a good place to start if you want to help people.
SQ is the means of transformation in every field of human endeavour. By teaching people how to experience spiritual intelligence, you will also accelerate social change, and contribute to the emergence of the next stage of collective evolution.
If you want to work as a spiritual intelligence trainer, the 3Q Practitioner Training Course is designed for you. It’s an online Course, which will train you to deliver courses in spiritual intelligence for colleges and universities, for business, and for the public. Sign up for the webinar for more information about the 3Q Practitioner Training Course.

What is the benefit of spiritual intelligence in a student’s life?

    • Spiritual intelligence (SQ) improves the application of intellectual intelligence (IQ) and increases emotional intelligence (EQ). As a combination of all three dimensions of intelligence, 3Q therefore results in better academic performance. Thus 3Q is of great benefit in a student’s life.

  • Yes. 3Q training can be incorporated into primary education for children. 3Q is already taught in schools in parts of the UK and soon in India.

  • The Practitioner course takes about 8 hours per week for three months. Each week you will receive three pre-recorded videos of one hour duration each. You can study these videos at any time that suits you. There is also one live session per week for one hour. In addition you are required to do some guided home study of the literature in psychology and spirituality.

    What is a balanced mind?

    • A mind governed by the soul is a balanced mind, in contrast to a mind governed by the ego. When your mind is governed by your ego, you are identified with your thoughts and emotions. This results in anxiety and stress, and motivates a life of constant seeking for satisfaction. But when the mind is governed by the soul, there is no stress and no seeking because you are the master of your thoughts and emotions, rather than their slave. Spiritual intelligence shifts from ego to soul. Thus a balanced mind is the product of spiritual intelligence. Therefore the key to a balanced mind is knowing how to activate spiritual intelligence. That’s what this webinar is about.

Is this based on any particular spiritual tradition?

    • This model of spiritual intelligence rests on evidence derived from three main sources. Firstly, findings in related fields of scientific research, including cognitive psychology, psycho-analysis, transpersonal psychology, and neuroscience [ref]. Secondly, the findings of ancient traditions of spiritual practice, based on the experience of spiritual practitioners over thousands of years [ref]. And thirdly, my own experience as a psychologist and spiritual practitioner in a variety of different spiritual traditions [ref]. This model of spiritual intelligence is therefore the result of a synthesis of findings in psychology and spirituality. No single spiritual tradition is represented here. Rather, the spiritual intelligence paradigm reflects the collective wisdom of multiple spiritual traditions, as corroborated by the findings of scientific research.
